A Wider Beach, Made for the Whole Crew
Planet Hollywood Cancún doesn’t sit on the famous km-Kukulcán hotel strip at all. It’s up in Costa Mujeres — a newer resort corridor about 35 km north of Cancún International Airport, past Punta Sam, where the coast turns broad, calm and refreshingly empty. That wide beach is the whole reason families and big friend groups first message us about the place: acres of open white sand facing Isla Mujeres across the bay, with room for everyone to spread out instead of jostling for a clear patch of shoreline.
We’ve photographed thousands of sessions across Cancún, and the number-one complaint about the central hotel-zone beaches is always the crowd — someone’s umbrella in every wide shot, strangers wandering through the background. Up here that problem simply disappears. You get open sand, an uninterrupted horizon and a cinematic backdrop that happens to match the resort’s movie-glamour theme perfectly. It’s the easiest beach in the area to photograph a dozen people at once and still have it feel calm and intimate.
The Widest Stretch of Sand We Shoot
The Costa Mujeres shoreline is genuinely different from the beaches at km 9 or km 14. The sand runs wider from the dune line to the waterline, the seabed shelves off gently, and the water stays calm and shallow well past the shore — which is exactly why parents relax the moment they step onto it. There is space to line up twelve or fifteen people without a stranger photo-bombing the edge of the frame, and enough clean background that we can back right up for the sweeping, wide, movie-poster shots this coast does so well.
Because it faces east across the bay toward Isla Mujeres, the light here is a gift. Sunrise breaks straight over the water, the sand is almost empty at that hour, and the whole beach glows warm and gold for the first hour of the day. That combination — width, calm and early light — is what turns an ordinary group photo into something you will actually print.
Family Sessions Where Nobody Has to Squeeze In
This is the beach we recommend most for three-generation trips. Toddlers can bolt across the sand without ending up in someone else’s photo, grandparents can settle comfortably near the water’s edge, and there is never that awkward wait for a gap in the crowd so everyone fits in one clean frame. Our full family photoshoot guide for Cancún covers outfits, timing and how we keep the little ones smiling — and every bit of it works better with this much room to move.
Big Groups, Bigger Frames
Friend reunions, milestone trips, extended families of twenty — the Costa Mujeres beach swallows a large group whole. We can string everyone along the shoreline for a wide editorial line, cluster you close for a candid, then pull back for the dramatic frame with Isla Mujeres floating on the horizon behind you. If you are traveling as a crew, our group photoshoot guide for Cancún explains how we pose ten-plus people so nobody vanishes into the back row.
Birthdays with the Whole Gang on the Sand
Plenty of guests up here are celebrating something — a 30th, a 50th, a quinceañera trip with a dozen cousins. Balloons, a cake set out on the sand, matching outfits: the open beach gives us room to stage it without a crowd pressing in on every side. Our birthday photoshoot guide for Cancún is full of ideas that photograph well, and the soft morning light on this coast makes the colours pop.
A Beach That Earns Its Movie-Set Billing
Broad, calm and uncrowded, Costa Mujeres gives a big group the one thing the central hotel-zone beaches can’t: room.
-
Room for the whole crew
The sand runs wide from dune to water, so a group of fifteen fits comfortably in one clean frame with open horizon behind them.
-
Calm, shallow water
The gentle shelf and quiet surf make this the beach we recommend when toddlers or grandparents are part of the session.
-
Sunrise is the golden ticket
The east-facing Caribbean sand catches warm early light and stays almost empty — the best window for luminous, uncrowded frames.
-
We meet you at the beach access
No resort access needed. We meet your group at an easy public spot by the sand, a couple of minutes from the hotel entrance.
Where Costa Mujeres Actually Is
Costa Mujeres is the stretch of coast north of Cancún proper, past Punta Sam and well beyond the km-Kukulcán hotel zone. From Cancún International Airport (CUN) it is about 35 km — roughly a 40 to 45-minute drive up Highway 307 and out along the Costa Mujeres road. Downtown Cancún, and the shops and restaurants clustered around Playa Fórum near km 9, sit about 30 to 35 minutes south. The beach itself faces Isla Mujeres across a calm, sheltered bay, which is what gives every wide shot that layered, deep-blue horizon.
Getting to the CANCUN Sign and Playa Delfines
Here is the one thing worth planning for. Because you are north of the hotel zone, the famous CANCUN letters and the lookout at Playa Delfines (km 18) are a longer drive south — figure about 40 to 50 minutes each way depending on traffic. If that iconic sign is on your must-shoot list, tell us early and we will build the extra travel time into the plan. Most groups, though, are perfectly happy staying on the wide-open Costa Mujeres sand right in front of the resort, where the space and the quiet do more for the photos than any landmark would.
Pricing is refreshingly simple and made for groups: there is no session fee — it is $15 USD per photo with a 10-photo minimum ($150 USD), or a group package from $200 USD when the whole gang wants in. You only ever pay for the images you love, so a large family can look through everything together and keep exactly the frames that matter.
Want a little extra drama in the mix once the group shots are done? Ask about our signature beach-gown editorial sessions at Planet Hollywood — meters of fabric catching the sea breeze on that same wide beach. And you can see how we work, alongside hundreds of recent travelers, on our Cancún photographer page.
Bring Everyone — There’s Room
Message us your dates and how many of you there are. The uncrowded sunrise slots on the Costa Mujeres beach are always the first to go.
Sessions at Planet Hollywood Cancún — FAQ
Is Planet Hollywood Cancún in the main hotel zone?
No — and that is the appeal. It sits up in Costa Mujeres, north of Cancún and past Punta Sam, well beyond the km-Kukulcán hotel strip. The trade-off is a broader, calmer, far less crowded beach, which is exactly why it photographs so well for families and larger groups.
Can we still get to the famous CANCUN sign for photos?
Yes, with a little planning. The CANCUN letters and Playa Delfines (km 18) are about a 40 to 50-minute drive south from Costa Mujeres. Tell us in advance if you want that backdrop and we will build the travel time into your session; otherwise most groups shoot happily on the wide beach right by the resort.
How big a group can you photograph on the beach here?
As big as you like. The Costa Mujeres sand is wide enough to arrange fifteen or twenty people in one clean frame with open horizon behind them — one of the main reasons we steer large families and friend groups to this beach rather than the crowded central ones.
How much does a photo session near Planet Hollywood cost?
There is no session fee. You pay $15 USD per photo with a 10-photo minimum ($150 USD), or choose a group package from $200 USD — handy when a whole family or friend group is in the shot. You only pay for the images you decide to keep.
Do we have to be staying at Planet Hollywood?
Not at all. Mexican beaches are public, so we meet your group at an easy access point by the sand a couple of minutes from the hotel entrance and shoot on the open Costa Mujeres beach. Guests and non-guests are equally welcome.
