Couples, groups and anniversaries against the yachts and promenades of the marina district — the sophisticated, camera-ready side of Cancún at km 1.

SLS Cancún

The Marina-Side Cancún Most Visitors Never Photograph

Almost every photo you have seen of Cancún was taken on the same busy strip of hotels. SLS Cancún is not on it. The hotel sits at the very northern edge of the zone — about km 1, inside Puerto Cancún, a modern marina district of yacht slips, palm-lined promenades and a calmer, more design-conscious shoreline. It is the polished, grown-up side of the city that most travellers drive straight past on the way in from the airport. For couples and groups who want images that do not look like everyone else’s, that difference is the entire point.

We have photographed thousands of sessions across Cancún, and the frames that stand out are almost never the crowded midday-beach kind. Puerto Cancún hands us something rarer: sleek boats on still marina water, wide open sky and an upscale quiet that reads as sophistication in every shot. Bring the outfits and the good mood — we handle the light, the direction and the marina-versus-sea decisions, so the pictures feel styled rather than snapped.

Why Puerto Cancún

Boats, Boardwalks and a Shoreline That Behaves

Puerto Cancún is a gated marina neighborhood at the northern tip of the zone, and its calmer water and modern architecture give every session a cleaner, more curated look than the central beaches.

  1. A backdrop of yachts and open water

The marina basin puts moored boats, glassy reflections and long promenades right behind you — an unmistakably upscale setting you simply cannot get on the busy central sand at km 9.

  2. Crowd-free, camera-friendly calm

Sitting away from the party beaches, Puerto Cancún stays uncluttered. Fewer strangers wander into frame, so your backgrounds stay clean and the whole shoot keeps an unhurried pace.

  3. Two looks in one location

Marina promenade on one side, open Caribbean beach on the other. We move from architectural, city-chic frames to barefoot shoreline shots without ever leaving the neighborhood.

  4. Styled, directed, effortless

Most of our clients have never modelled. We direct every pose and hand-pick each spot, so style-conscious couples and groups leave with images that look intentional, not touristy.

Editorial Frames the Central Strip Simply Can’t Give You

The classic hotel-zone beach is beautiful, but it is also the single most photographed backdrop in the Mexican Caribbean — you have seen it a hundred times before you even arrive. Puerto Cancún hands us the opposite: a marina setting with genuine architectural character, where sleek yachts, glassy water and clean modern lines let us build images that feel like a magazine spread rather than a vacation snapshot. When the light drops in the late afternoon, the boats and boardwalks pick up gold in a way plain sand never does.

Practically, that variety is a gift. In a single hour we can start along the marina promenade for polished, styled portraits, then walk a couple of minutes to the open beach for softer, barefoot frames with the Caribbean behind you. You get two distinct moods from one easy meeting point — and no long taxi rides in between. It is the kind of range that usually takes two locations and half a day; here it is a short stroll.

Couples Who Want More Than the Standard Beach Shot

This is where SLS earns its keep. If you are travelling as a two and want something beyond the usual sunset silhouette, the marina backdrop does a lot of the styling for you. We keep the direction gentle and the mood natural — most of our clients are not models — and the results feel like you, only more cinematic. Our full couples photo session guide for Cancún walks through outfits, timing and how we pose people who feel awkward in front of a lens.

Groups, Milestones and the Unhurried Anniversary

Puerto Cancún is just as generous with more people in the frame. Travelling with friends or extended family, a bachelorette crew or a multi-generation trip? The wide promenades give everyone room to spread out without fighting for space, which is why so many of our group photo sessions in Cancún happen on this side of town. And for couples marking a decade together or a first year back in paradise, the calm, grown-up setting suits an anniversary photoshoot that is more about each other than the crowd around you.

Finding Us at Km 1, Where the Hotel Zone Starts

SLS Cancún sits on Blvd. Kukulcán at about km 1, the northern start of the hotel zone, right where the city meets the Puerto Cancún marina. That address has a few quiet advantages. It is one of the closest resorts to Cancún International Airport (CUN) — roughly a 20 to 25 minute drive — and downtown Cancún, with its restaurants and markets, is only minutes away. The marina itself is lined with waterfront dining and a walkable boardwalk, so arriving early or lingering after the shoot is genuinely pleasant. We meet you at an easy, public spot by the marina or a beach access near the hotel; there is no need to be a guest, and we never photograph inside the property.

How Far to the Postcard Beaches?

Want to add one of Cancún’s famous stretches of sand to your session? Playa Fórum (around km 9), in the livelier heart of the zone, is about a 10 to 12 minute drive south, and Playa Delfines (km 18), home of the giant CANCÚN sign and the best public lookout, is roughly 20 to 25 minutes further along the boulevard. Most of our SLS clients happily stay put — the marina is the reason they chose this side of town — but the option is always there.

Pricing is refreshingly simple. There is no session fee: you pay $15 USD per photo with a 10-photo minimum ($150 USD), or choose a group package from $200 USD when there are more of you. You only pay for the images you love, and you can see how we work — and hundreds of recent clients — on our Cancún photographer page.

Photo Sessions at SLS Cancún — FAQ

What makes Puerto Cancún different from the classic hotel-zone beach?

The central strip at km 9 is the backdrop in almost every Cancún photo you have seen — beautiful, but crowded and familiar. Puerto Cancún, up at km 1, is a modern marina district: yachts, promenades, calmer water and a quieter, more upscale feel. It gives your images an editorial, city-chic look you cannot get on the busy central sand.

Do we need to stay at SLS Cancún for the session?

Not at all. We photograph on the public marina promenades and beach access points around Puerto Cancún, and we meet you at an easy public spot near the hotel. If you happen to be a guest, even better — but resort access is never required.

Is the marina setting good for group and family sessions?

Very. The wide, open promenades give groups room to move without strangers walking through the shot, which is why so many bachelorette parties, friend trips and multi-generation families choose this side of town. We direct the whole group so everyone looks natural and relaxed.

How much does a photo session near SLS Cancún cost?

There is no session fee. You pay $15 USD per photo with a 10-photo minimum ($150 USD), or choose a group package from $200 USD when there are more of you. You only pay for the final images you want to keep.

When is the best light in Puerto Cancún?

Golden hour — the hour after sunrise or before sunset — is ideal. The open marina and water give warm, side-lit frames, and the modern white architecture bounces that light softly onto faces. Tell us your dates and we’ll recommend the exact window.
