Cancun LGBTQ+ Wedding Photographer

Legal since 2012, and photographed like any other wedding — which is the point

Quintana Roo legalised same-sex marriage in 2012, years ahead of much of the world. That is not a talking point: it means you can actually get married in Cancún, not just hold a ceremony.

The part nobody tells you: it is legal here

Most couples who write to us about an LGBTQ+ wedding in Cancún assume they are booking a symbolic ceremony, the way a straight destination couple usually does. They are often wrong in the best way. Quintana Roo legalised same-sex marriage in 2012 — among the first states in Mexico, and years ahead of several of the countries our couples fly in from. It has been legal nationwide since 2022. If marrying legally on this coast matters to you, it is on the table, and it is the same civil process as for anyone else.

What changes photographically is smaller than people expect and far more specific than a stock «we welcome everyone» line. Two brides or two grooms break the default wedding timeline: there is no long bridal prep and short groom prep to alternate between, which usually means two simultaneous getting-ready rooms and a real case for a second photographer. There is no default about who walks, who waits, or who sees whom first. We ask instead of assuming, on the planning call, before the day. Everything else — collections, coverage, the full range — lives on our Cancun wedding photographer page.

What Actually Differs

Four things we do differently, and none is a rainbow logo

Two getting-ready rooms, not one and a half

The straight wedding template alternates between a long bridal prep and a short groom one. Two brides or two grooms means two full, simultaneous preparations — the single strongest argument for a second photographer on your day.

We ask about the walk, we do not assume

Who walks in, with whom, in what order, and whether there is a first look at all. There is no default and we will not impose one. Five minutes on the planning call saves a very awkward thirty seconds on the day.

No gendered posing by reflex

Much of wedding posing is built on a height difference and a role. We direct for how you two actually stand together — which sounds obvious, and is the thing couples most often tell us previous photographers got wrong.

We screen the venue before you sign

We have worked at most properties on this coast. If a resort or an officiant has been awkward with a couple before, we say so plainly rather than let you find out at the rehearsal.

Where

Three Cancún settings, and what to ask each one

The question is not whether a venue «allows» it — legally they must. The question is whether their team has done it before.

  1. An adults-only resort in the Hotel Zone

Le Blanc, NIZUC, Secrets The Vine and similar properties host same-sex weddings routinely and their coordinators do not blink. Ask one concrete question when you enquire: how many have you done this year. A number is an answer; «we welcome everyone» is a brochure.

  2. A public beach, with a legal civil ceremony

Because marriage is legal here, a judge can officiate. Mexican shoreline below the high-tide line is federal, so the ceremony itself costs nothing; what you are organising is the paperwork — judge, medical tests, four witnesses with official ID and apostilled documents, plus several business days. Plan a week, not a weekend.

  3. Playa Mujeres or Isla Mujeres

North of the city: wider beaches, far fewer day-trippers in the background, and — on Isla Mujeres — the only west-facing major beach here, so the sun actually sets over the water behind your ceremony. Quieter than the strip, which some couples want and others do not.

We will confirm access, fees and the exact hour for your date before you commit to anything.

Legal, symbolic, and why here the choice is real

For most destination couples on this coast the legal-versus-symbolic question is decided for them: a Mexican civil wedding needs a judge, medical tests, four witnesses with official ID and apostilled birth certificates, plus several business days of waiting, so they marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the sand. That option is fully available to you too, and most of our LGBTQ+ couples take it for the same practical reason everyone else does.

But it is worth saying out loud: for a same-sex couple flying in from a country where this is not possible, «we could actually get legally married there» is a different sentence. Quintana Roo has allowed it since 2012 and Mexico nationwide since 2022, with no separate procedure and no extra requirements. If that is what you want, plan a week rather than a weekend and tell us early so the timeline is built around the judge. Our guide to a legal versus symbolic wedding in Mexico and the document list cover both routes.

The timeline changes, and the coverage with it

A conventional wedding day is built around an asymmetry: hours of bridal preparation on one side, forty minutes on the other, and a photographer who moves between them. Two brides, or two grooms, breaks that. Both preparations are real, both matter, and they usually happen at the same time in two different rooms. One photographer has to choose; two do not. This is the clearest case for a second shooter we encounter, and we say so rather than sell you a package and let you discover the gap in the gallery.

The other change is choreography. Who walks in, alone or together, with whom, and whether there is a first look — there is no template, and we have watched photographers freeze because they were waiting for one. We work it out with you on the planning call: three or four questions, answered once, and the day runs without anyone improvising in front of your guests. Our guide on how many hours a wedding actually needs covers the pacing for both formats.

Vendors, family, and what we will tell you honestly

Cancún is genuinely one of the easiest places in Mexico for this. The resorts have been doing it for a decade, the coordinators are used to it, and the city lives on international tourism. That said, a coordinator being fine with it and an officiant being fluent in it are not the same thing, and neither is a florist who has never written two names of the same gender on a place card. We have worked at most properties here, and if a specific venue or vendor has been awkward with a couple before, we will tell you plainly. That is a more useful promise than a badge on a website.

The other thing worth planning for is family. Some of our couples have guest lists where not everyone is equally at ease, and that shows on camera if nobody has thought about it. If there is someone you would rather not have in a formal group shot, or a parent whose reaction you would rather we did not chase, tell us. We would far rather know in advance than make the wrong call in the moment — and nothing about that conversation leaves the planning call.

What We Cover

Full coverage, built for your actual day

Two preparations, properly

Both getting-ready rooms covered in full. With a second photographer that is simultaneous; with one we build the timeline so neither becomes a footnote.

A ceremony without a template

Legal or symbolic, walking in together or separately, first look or none. We shoot what you planned, not what a stock timeline expects.

A protected golden hour

Twenty minutes of low sun that belong to the two of you, built into the schedule because it is the one part of the day that cannot move.

Drone and video on request

Aerials over the beach, and a dedicated videographer alongside the photographers. Quoted with the rest, never as a surprise.

How It Works

From your first message to your date being held

Four steps, and none of them is a price list. We would rather understand your day first.

  1. Step one

    You tell us the basics

Date, or the month you are aiming at, and roughly what you are picturing. Two lines is enough to start.

  2. Step two

    A brief planning call

Fifteen or twenty minutes with the photographer who would actually shoot it — the hour, the location, the light, what matters to you.

  3. Step three

A quote written for your day

Coverage, hours, whether video or drone is worth it, and any fees we already know about. No package you have to squeeze into.

  4. Step four

    20 % holds the date

A deposit reserves your date and your team. The balance is due before the day, and every edited photo is included.

Questions

LGBTQ+ Wedding in Cancún — the questions couples actually ask

Can we legally get married in Cancun as a same-sex couple?

Yes. Quintana Roo legalised same-sex marriage in 2012 and it has been legal across Mexico since 2022, with the same civil process as for anyone else — a judge, medical tests, four witnesses with official ID and apostilled documents, and several business days. Plan a week rather than a weekend. Most couples still marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here, which is also entirely normal.

Do we need two photographers?

It is the strongest case for it we encounter. Two brides or two grooms usually means two full getting-ready sessions happening at the same time in two rooms, and one photographer has to pick one. We will tell you honestly whether your specific day needs it rather than defaulting to two and charging for it.

Are the resorts here actually comfortable with it?

Overwhelmingly yes — the big Cancún properties have hosted same-sex weddings for a decade. When you enquire, ask one concrete question: how many have you done this year. A number tells you something; «we welcome everyone» does not. We have worked at most of them and will tell you plainly if a specific venue has been awkward before.

How do you handle posing for two brides or two grooms?

By directing for how you two actually stand together instead of applying a template built around a height difference and a role. It sounds obvious. It is also the single thing couples most often tell us previous photographers got wrong.

What if some of our family is not supportive?

Tell us on the planning call. If there is someone you would rather keep out of the formal group shots, or a reaction you would rather we did not go looking for, we work around it quietly. We would much rather know in advance than make the wrong call in front of your guests, and nothing from that conversation goes anywhere.

How much does it cost?

The same as any wedding of the same size and coverage — there is no different price list, and if a vendor ever quotes you one, that is the answer to a different question. We quote after a short planning call, once we know the date, the format and whether the day needs a second photographer. A 20 % deposit holds the date.
