A Wedding Morning That Starts on a Terrace, Not in a Corridor

Most destination weddings we photograph begin in a standard room: the dress hooked over a wardrobe door, four people on one bed, and a photographer trying not to stand in the bathroom. This resort does not have that room. Every category is a suite with a sitting area and a private outdoor terrace, and the top Elegance Club suites run over two floors with a plunge pool on the roof. It sounds like a comfort detail. On a wedding morning it is a photographic one.

What it buys you is simple: space and daylight, in the two hours that produce more frames than any other stretch of the day. The bridal party does not have to split across a corridor. The sand here looks out at the sunrise, which means that at the end of the day the sun drops behind the resort rather than into the sea. That is good news, not bad: instead of shooting into a hard low sun, we get a long, even, rose-coloured wash across the beach with no squinting and no blown-out horizon. We usually build the ceremony to start around two hours before that, which leaves the vows, the family groupings and an unhurried set of couple portraits all inside the best light of the day.

The one variable is the calendar. Sundown moves by well over an hour between midwinter and midsummer, so a start time that lands perfectly in June finishes in the dark in December. Booking the Wedding Photographer You Already Chose

Resorts in this bracket charge a fee for a photographer who is not on their own list, and it is worth asking the coordinator for that figure in writing early, while you still have room in the budget to place it. Two Ways to Say the Vows, and What Each Does to the Day

A civil marriage in Mexico is legally binding and comes with witnesses, documents and an appointment that fixes the hour of your ceremony. A symbolic ceremony, with the legal signing done quietly at home, leaves the hour entirely yours — and looks identical in every photograph. Neither is the right answer for everyone; both are worth settling before we draft the timeline, because one of them decides when you can start.
