Costa Mujeres barely existed as a place to stay before 2018. The strip of coast north of Cancún was authorised for several times the hotel rooms that stand on it today, and Riu Palace Costa Mujeres went up in that first wave, so the resort has grown into a neighbourhood that is still arriving rather than one that filled up decades ago. Practically, that means fewer wedding parties competing for the same square of sand on a Saturday in February.

Guests fly into the same airport everyone else uses and reach the front door in under an hour without ever crossing downtown, which keeps a destination wedding simple to explain on an invitation. Once they are here, the ceremony, the reception and their rooms all sit on one all-inclusive property, so nobody has to organise anything more complicated than showing up on time.

Reading Wedding Light on a Bay That Sits Still

The hour bracketing sunset is where wedding photographs live: warm, low, forgiving light that flatters skin and turns the sea rose. We generally build the ceremony to begin around two hours before the sun goes down, which leaves room for vows, family groupings and an unhurried portrait set before the colour drains. What this particular bay adds is stillness — sheltered water reflects, and a flat sea keeps the light bouncing back up into faces instead of scattering.

Then there is the other end of the day, and up here it earns the alarm clock. The sun climbs out of the sea on this side of the peninsula rather than over the rooftops, so the first light of the morning crosses open water and lands warm on the sand. What makes that usable for a wedding is the second half of the arithmetic: on a shoreline carrying this few hotels, nobody is out there yet. No loungers claimed, no swimmers, nothing behind you but colour on the water — a couple willing to get up for it keep the whole beach and a horizon with no one standing in it.

The variable is the calendar. Sundown drifts by something close to an hour and a half between December and June, so a start time that finishes in gold one month finishes in the dark the next, and we anchor every wedding timeline to the true sunset for your date rather than to a habit. Sheltered water also tends to mean lighter sargassum here than further south, though no beach on this coast is immune and we plan for the possibility either way. Asking Riu About an Outside Wedding Photographer

Get this in writing before anything is signed. All-inclusives at this level generally handle an outside wedding photographer one of two ways: a photographer fee added to your wedding package, or a paid day pass that admits us as a registered guest. Both are ordinary, neither is a reason to give up the photographer whose work you actually want, and the only real mistake is discovering the terms on the morning of the wedding. A Legal Wedding, or Vows Without the Paperwork

Decide this early, because it governs when your ceremony is allowed to start. A civil marriage in Mexico brings documents, witnesses and a stricter clock; plenty of couples handle the legal signatures at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on this beach instead, which photographs identically and hands the afternoon back to you. Two Riu Beaches for a Single Wedding Weekend

Riu Dunamar stands next door on the same white sand, and guests of the Palace may use its facilities — the Splash Water World park, the Pacha nightclub — with evening dining the usual exception. For a wedding that spills across several days, that is two properties worth of backdrops without anybody arranging a single ride.
