A Stone Gazebo and Open Sand Are Not the Same Wedding Photograph

Most beach resorts hand you one ceremony spot and a colour scheme. Here the vows can happen on the open sand or under a stone gazebo that faces planted garden on one side and open water on the other, and those are not variations on a theme — they are two different pictures. Stone gives you architecture: columns to frame the aisle, a roof that keeps faces out of hard overhead light, a structure that reads as a place rather than a stretch. Sand gives you the opposite — no edges at all, a horizon that runs out of the frame, and guests seated on something that photographs as light as they do.

What happens after the ceremony keeps moving too. Cocktails and dinner run on terraces, in the ballrooms, or back down on the beach, and every one of those hands us a different quality of light and a different set of backgrounds. The practical upshot for you is that the running order is worth deciding early, and it is a conversation the resort wedding team can have quickly, because they know which spaces are free on your date better than any list online does.

A Wedding Address Between a Marina and a Golf Course

Excellence Playa Mujeres sits inside the gated Playa Mujeres community on the coast north of Cancun, across the channel from Isla Mujeres, with a marina on one side and a golf course on the other. This stretch was built out late and built low, which is why nothing tall stands behind the beach and why the community stays quiet in a way the older resort strips do not.

For a wedding party that is worth more than it sounds. Guests arrive once, and everything after that — the ceremony, the party, the breakfast the next morning where everybody compares notes — happens behind the same gate. We come to you, and nobody has to be moved anywhere for a photograph.

Shade at the Gazebo, Glare on the Sand: Timing the Ceremony

The water lies out in front of the resort and the land behind it, so the sun comes up out of the sea and goes back down behind the buildings. That gives you two very different hours to choose between. First light arrives clean and low straight off the water, on sand nobody has walked on yet, which is why we push couples hard towards a sunrise session even when the ceremony is in the afternoon — our first look guide explains what that hour is good for. Late afternoon is the other one: the sky turns warm and generous, even though the sun itself drops inland rather than into the sea.

Here is where the two ceremony settings stop being interchangeable. On open sand the light is unforgiving until the last stretch of the afternoon, so we build the ceremony to begin with roughly two hours of daylight left. Under the stone gazebo the roof does that work for us, and a ceremony can start earlier without anybody squinting through their own vows. Either way, sunset drifts close to an hour and a half across the calendar, so a start time that ends in gold in one season ends in the dark in another. The Question to Put to Your Wedding Coordinator Early

Ask, in writing and well before you sign anything, what the resort charges for a wedding photographer you bring yourself. Properties in this bracket normally do one of two things: they invoice a photographer fee, or they admit your photographer on a paid day pass. Both are ordinary, both are budget lines like any other, and the only version of this that ever causes trouble is the one nobody asked about until the week of the wedding. A Legal Ceremony, or Just the Words in Front of Everyone

One more call to make early, because it governs the clock. A civil marriage in Mexico brings paperwork, witnesses and a tighter schedule; plenty of couples sign at home instead and hold a symbolic ceremony here, which photographs identically and hands the day back its slack. Decide it before we draft anything, because it sets when the ceremony can start — and that, in turn, is what decides whether the gazebo or the sand is the easier room to be in.
