The Riu Palace Wedding With a Seat for Every Generation

There are two Riu Palace towers in Cancún, and picking the right one quietly shapes the entire feel of your wedding. The Palace Las Américas sits further along at the Punta Cancún elbow, where the open Caribbean rolls in with real surf — and it is adults-only, marvellous for a grown-up party but no home for a flower girl. Riu Palace Peninsula, up on the northern arm, is the one that keeps a seat for every generation: little ones knee-deep in the shallows, grandparents parked in the shade, the whole clan under a single roof. When three or four generations have crossed a border to be there, that open door is the whole reason to book a wedding here — and it shows up in the pictures, which fill with the people who matter rather than a neat couple standing alone on an empty beach.

The beach does the rest. This northern shoreline looks onto the Bahía de Mujeres instead of the open ocean, so the water lies flat and hushed behind a ceremony rather than hammering the shore — kinder to a barefoot toddler and kinder to a photograph. And the sand is generous. When a hundred wedding guests have to squeeze together for the one picture everybody will later ask to see, most beaches on the strip force a compromise: crop the edges, back the group against a sea wall, or shoot it in two halves. Here nothing has to give. We simply let everyone fan out — the kids cross-legged up front, the grown-ups filling in behind, the tallest teenagers anchoring the back — with the whole turquoise bay opening up above their heads. One Ride From the Airport, One Address for the Whole Wedding Crowd

Move a hundred wedding guests across a border and the logistics quietly decide how the weekend feels, so the address earns its keep. Riu Palace Peninsula stands at about Blvd. Kukulcán km 5.5, near the head of the zone just before the boulevard swings east at Punta Cancún, which puts it unusually close to the runway: Cancún International Airport (CUN) is roughly half an hour away — 25 to 30 minutes, among the quickest transfers on the coast. Your guests will land on a scatter of different flights over a day or two, and a short, uneventful taxi ride is exactly what a jet-lagged family wants; nobody turns up to the welcome dinner already wrung out. On the wedding morning we meet you at the public beach access a couple of minutes from the lobby doors, so nothing has to be booked through the resort and no one is left circling the property, phone in hand, hunting for the photographer.

Playa Fórum, down at km 9 in the busier middle of the zone, is a five-to-eight-minute hop south, and the landmark lookout at Playa Delfines (km 18) — the one with the giant, candy-coloured CANCUN letters — is about twenty minutes along the boulevard, a free public terrace that all but demands one enormous wedding-party shot. The Bay’s Wedding Light, Morning and Evening

Here is where a wedding photographer earns their keep: the beach points east, and that one fact writes your whole timeline. Face east and the sun climbs out of the sea and sets behind the buildings, so the real drama is a morning event, not an evening one. Early, before most of the wedding party has stirred, the light arrives long and honey-coloured across empty sand — our favourite window for a first look or a next-morning portrait of just the two of you. Later on, the sun slips down behind the resort towers rather than into the water — a quiet gift for a big group: you swap the postcard sunset for soft, shadowless backlight, and a hundred guests can turn toward the camera without a single squint. We usually set the ceremony for around two hours before sunset, which drops the vows, the family line-ups and your couple portraits neatly inside that warm stretch.

All of that shifts with the calendar — sunset creeps earlier or later, peak weeks bring bigger crowds, and the sargassum that occasionally drifts ashore comes and goes by season. Bringing Your Own Wedding Photographer, and Keeping It Simple on Paper

Bringing an outside wedding photographer into a big all-inclusive sometimes comes with a vendor fee, and if the resort has mentioned one, do not let it rattle you — it is a routine line item, usually small set against the wedding as a whole. Get the current figure from your coordinator in writing and pencil it into the budget early — that is the whole task, and once it is done the number never comes up again.
