The hour, and why we will not shoot at noon

Cancún holds UTC−5 all year, so the light is predictable: the last hour before sunset falls between 17:15 and 18:25 depending on the month, and that is where an engagement session belongs. Low sun, warm side-light on an east-facing beach, and a sky that colours behind the lagoon. Sunrise works too and gives you an empty beach, but very few couples on holiday want a 6 a.m. call for a session that is supposed to be fun.

What we will push back on is the middle of the day. Overhead sun flattens faces, blows out the water and makes everyone squint, and no amount of editing fixes squinting. If your only free window is midday, the honest answer is a cenote — under a canopy, with light coming through a hole in the rock, noon is the best hour rather than the worst. We would rather change the location than the hour.

What to wear, and what to bring

Two outfits is the sweet spot: one you would wear to a nice dinner, one you are comfortable walking into the water in. Solid colours and soft fabrics photograph better than busy prints, and anything that moves — a long skirt, a light dress — gives us something to work with in the wind, which there always is. Bring the ring cleaned; it will be in more frames than you expect. Skip brand-new shoes and heavy makeup: this is a beach, and both of those photograph as effort.

Sessions run ninety minutes as standard, which is enough for two locations and a change of clothes if you want one. We send a short note a week before with the meeting point, the exact hour and what the light will be doing. Delivery is about 72 hours — fast on purpose, because save-the-dates have deadlines and because you will want to post something the same week.

Sargassum, resorts and the practical details

Sargassum is heaviest from roughly April to August and hits the east-facing Hotel Zone beaches hardest. For a session it matters less than for a wedding, because we can simply go somewhere else: the north-bay beaches, Isla Mujeres or inland to a cenote. If you want the session on your resort’s beach, ask the concierge first — most all-inclusives charge an outside-vendor fee or require a day pass for a photographer who is not on their list, and our page on resort vendor fees explains how that works. In practice we meet you on a public stretch a few minutes away: the shoreline below the high-tide line is federal, so it is free, unrestricted and usually prettier.
