Legal here, and what that actually takes

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Quintana Roo since 2012 and across Mexico since 2022, with no separate procedure. What it takes is the same as for anyone: a judge, medical tests, four witnesses with official identification, apostilled birth certificates and several business days of waiting. That turns a long weekend into a week, which is why most destination couples — of every kind — marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the sand instead.

We mention it explicitly because for a couple flying in from somewhere this is not possible, the sentence «we could actually get legally married there» lands differently than a logistics note. If you want it, tell us early and we build the timeline around the judge. If you do not, the ceremony looks identical in every photograph — only the paperwork differs. Why the coves matter more here than the amenities

The practical difference between this coast and Cancún’s hotel strip is who else is on the beach. Between Puerto Morelos and Akumal several properties front a cove rather than a shared stretch, which means that when we pull back for the wide frame — the one that shows the place, the one couples print — there is nobody in it who was not invited. That is a small thing on paper. Talk to enough couples who have spent their lives being watched and it stops being small.

The trade is logistics. A cove resort is further from the airport, further from a town, and the guest transfers need planning. Playacar and Playa del Carmen give you restaurants and nightlife within walking distance at the cost of a narrower, busier beach. We will tell you which one your guest list actually wants rather than which one photographs better, because those are not always the same answer.

The timeline, the second photographer, and the family question

Two preparations happening at once is the structural difference in an LGBTQ+ wedding day, and it is the strongest argument for a second photographer we encounter on this coast. One photographer has to choose a room; two do not. We will tell you honestly whether your day needs it — if you are getting ready together, or one after the other, it does not, and we are not going to sell you a body you do not need. And the part nobody puts on a website: some guest lists are not uniformly warm. If there is a relative you would rather keep out of the formal groups, or a reaction you would rather we did not go hunting for, tell us on the planning call. We would much rather know than make the wrong call in front of a hundred people. Nothing from that conversation goes anywhere, and nothing about it changes how the day is covered.
