A Wedding Night That Is Not Confined to One Building

Riu Playacar sits inside the gated Playacar development, on the beach, and it is not the only RIU house in it. That matters on a wedding night more than it does on any other night of your stay: the chain runs its themed parties at the Riu Tequila and opens them to guests of every RIU hotel in Playa del Carmen, so a guest list spread across more than one address still ends up in the same room at the end of the evening. Relatives who booked separately, friends who found a better rate down the road, the cousins who left it late — none of them are cut out of the last hour.

For us that is one long continuous night rather than two events. We photograph the ceremony and the reception on the property, and when the party relocates we go with it: the shots of your friends carrying their shoes, of your mother refusing to sit down, of the group that stayed until the lights came up. Those frames are the reason a gallery reads like a night instead of a schedule.

Fitting the Ceremony Into an Evening the House Already Owns

Golden hour — the soft, generous light in the hour bracketing sundown — is where wedding pictures live, and on this beach we usually build the ceremony to begin about two hours ahead of it. That gives vows, family groupings and an unhurried portrait set enough runway to finish while the light still has colour in it, and it lands your reception at the point in the evening when the resort itself comes alive rather than fighting it.

The complication is the calendar. Sundown drifts by close to ninety minutes between December and June, so a start time that finishes in warm light one month finishes in the dark the next; we anchor every wedding timeline to the true sunset for your date instead of a rule of thumb. One Question for the Wedding Office, Asked Early

Ask the resort in writing, well before anything is signed, how it handles an outside wedding photographer. Properties in this bracket normally do one of two things: charge a photographer fee, or admit your shooter on a paid day pass. Both are routine and both are budgetable — you simply want the number on paper months ahead rather than in the week of the wedding. A legal civil marriage in Mexico brings documents, witnesses and a stricter clock; plenty of couples handle the legal part at home instead and hold a symbolic ceremony on the sand here that looks identical through the lens and leaves the evening room to breathe.
