The coast where small is the better option
Ask what a Riviera Maya wedding looks like and most people picture a four-hundred-room resort. The more interesting version is the one that fits twenty-five people: a villa in Playacar with everyone staying together, a semi-private cove where nobody walks through the ceremony, a dinner on a wooden walkway at Mayakoba, or a long table set at the edge of a cenote. These are the places a hundred-and-fifty-guest wedding simply cannot book — and they are the best-looking spaces on this coast.
What that does for photographs is straightforward: with twenty-five guests, every person who flew in gets covered properly, the group photograph takes four minutes, and golden hour belongs to you without a negotiation. If you are still deciding between this and a larger celebration, the full range lives on our Riviera Maya wedding photographer page.
What a small guest list buys you here
Access to the best spaces
Villas, coves, mangrove walkways and cenote edges. The most photogenic settings between Puerto Morelos and Akumal have small capacities, which is exactly why big weddings never use them.
Everybody in the gallery
Twenty-five guests means twenty-five sets of real photographs. Nobody crosses an ocean to appear out of focus behind you.
Six to eight hours is plenty
No processional to stage, no thirty-table service, no forty-minute formals. Shorter day, shorter coverage, smaller quote — with nothing actually missing.
A cenote the next morning
The add-on that only works on this coast. Fresh water and limestone twenty minutes inland, in a dress you have stopped protecting.
Three Riviera Maya settings for twenty-five people
All three are available to a small wedding and closed to a large one.
-
A private villa in Playacar or Puerto Aventuras
Everyone under one roof for the weekend, a pool, a terrace and a kitchen. The getting-ready coverage is the best this format produces, because the entire morning happens in one house with the people you chose rather than in three hotel rooms.
-
A semi-private cove at a boutique resort
Between Puerto Morelos and Akumal several properties have sheltered frontage that genuinely belongs to them. A ceremony of twenty-five there has no strangers in the wide shots and no day-trippers walking through — the single hardest thing to achieve on a busy beach.
-
A cenote or a Mayakoba walkway for dinner
Not a beach at all. A long table at the edge of fresh water, or under trees on a wooden walkway over a mangrove canal. Capacity is small, access is on foot, and the photographs look like nothing else on this coast.
We will confirm access, fees and the exact hour for your date before you commit to anything.
The Portfolio
Real weddings we photographed in the Riviera Maya
Couples who said yes with us along this coast. Not every frame is from a Intimate Wedding — we would rather show you honest work from the same beaches, the same light and the same team.
The shape of a small Riviera Maya wedding day
It runs simply, and the simplicity is the point. Getting ready together, a ceremony about ninety minutes before sunset — the coast faces east, so that is when the light comes down the sand warm and even — twenty minutes of portraits while everyone has a drink, then dinner at one table for as long as it lasts. Six to eight hours of coverage takes it from the first details into the speeches, and one photographer is usually enough unless there are two getting-ready locations at once.
One thing worth knowing: this coast has no sunset over the water, because the sun drops behind the jungle. What it does have is a genuinely extraordinary sunrise straight out of the Caribbean, and a small wedding is the only format that can use it. A first-light ceremony for twenty people on an empty beach is the best light available here, and it is a real option in a way it never is for a hundred and fifty guests.
Minimum spends, vendor fees and the villa alternative
Resorts sell weddings as packages with guest-count thresholds and minimum spends, and a twenty-five-person wedding often sits awkwardly below them. Ask early: what is the minimum for a private event, is a ceremony-only booking possible, and does an outside photographer trigger a vendor fee or a day pass. Along this coast the last answer is usually yes — see our page on resort vendor fees for the amounts and the workarounds.
The villa route sidesteps most of it. A house for the weekend, a private chef, a ceremony on the public beach in front — federal land, no permit needed for a small ceremony with no structures — and dinner on the terrace. For under thirty guests it is frequently better value than a resort package, and it gives us a whole property to photograph instead of a corner of one. On the paperwork, most international couples marry legally at home; our legal versus symbolic guide explains both routes.
Sargassum, rain, and why forty people are easier than two hundred
Sargassum runs roughly April to August on this coast and is very local — one property can be clear while the next is not. For a small wedding the fix is trivial: move the ceremony to the garden, to a different corner of the cove, or inland to a cenote. Twenty-five people can change plan with one message; a hundred and fifty cannot. We check conditions in the weeks before your date, and the month-by-month guide is the honest version if you are still picking a week.
Rain works the same way. June to October brings twenty-minute afternoon squalls, and forty people fit under a terrace or inside a villa without anyone getting wet. The plan B that a large wedding needs to rehearse is, at this size, just a room. That is not a small advantage — it is one of the strongest practical arguments for choosing this format on a coast with a real rainy season.
Coverage sized to your day
Six to eight hours, typically
Details, getting ready, the ceremony, golden-hour portraits and dinner. We quote the hours your day actually needs.
Every guest, individually
The whole point of the format. Everyone who travelled gets real photographs with you and with each other.
The long table, properly shot
Toasts, reactions and the moment the room goes quiet. Dinner is the heart of an intimate wedding and it deserves the coverage.
A cenote session the next day
Optional and the best add-on on this coast: fresh water, limestone and light through a hole in the rock.
How It Works
From your first message to your date being held
Four steps, and none of them is a price list. We would rather understand your day first.
-
Step one
You tell us the basics
Date, or the month you are aiming at, and roughly what you are picturing. Two lines is enough to start.
-
Step two
A brief planning call
Fifteen or twenty minutes with the photographer who would actually shoot it — the hour, the location, the light, what matters to you.
-
Step three
A quote written for your day
Coverage, hours, whether video or drone is worth it, and any fees we already know about. No package you have to squeeze into.
-
Step four
20 % holds the date
A deposit reserves your date and your team. The balance is due before the day, and every edited photo is included.

Intimate Wedding in the Riviera Maya — the questions couples actually ask
What counts as an intimate wedding?
Ten to forty guests. Below ten it behaves like an elopement and our elopement page is the better read; above about fifty you need a venue with real capacity, a defended timeline and usually two photographers, which is the format on our pillar page.
Is a villa cheaper than a resort for twenty-five guests?
Often, yes — especially under thirty guests, because resort packages carry minimum spends that a small wedding sits below. A villa also gives everyone one roof, a pool and a kitchen, and it gives us a whole property to photograph. We are happy to talk through both on the planning call.
Can we do the ceremony on a public beach and dinner elsewhere?
Yes, and it is one of the best-value plans here. A small ceremony with no structures on federal shoreline needs no permit; then everyone walks or drives to a private dinner. It also means you are not paying a resort for the part of the day that the beach provides for free.
Could we get married at sunrise instead?
On this coast, yes, and it is the best light there is — the sun comes straight out of the Caribbean and the beach is empty. It only works with a small guest list, which is exactly why it belongs on this page rather than on the pillar.
What about the outside-vendor fee?
Most resorts along this coast charge one, or require a day pass, for a photographer who is not on their in-house list. Amounts vary by property and change, so we confirm yours rather than quote a number. A villa or a restaurant buyout avoids it entirely.
How many photographers do we need?
One, in most cases. A second earns their place when there are two simultaneous getting-ready locations or when you want the ceremony from two angles. We tell you which applies rather than defaulting to two and charging for it.
