Petempich Bay, and What It Means for Your Wedding Party

One thing worth straightening out before anyone books a flight: Sensira is not in Tulum, whatever a booking page may have told you. It stands on Bahía de Petempich, at the Puerto Morelos end of the Riviera Maya, a little under half an hour south of Cancún International Airport — closer to the airport than most of the coast, and considerably closer than the beach hotels people picture when they hear Tulum. For a wedding party that flies in from three time zones on the same afternoon, that is the difference between arriving fresh and arriving flattened.

The practical effect on the day is that nobody has to leave. Ceremony, cocktails, reception, ballroom and rooms are all inside one gate, and the sand out front is the resort’s own. We meet your wedding party at the property, work it from the getting-ready suites to the last dance, and never ask anyone to get into a vehicle in formalwear.

The Getting-Ready Hour Is the Busiest Hour of a Sensira Wedding

At most resorts that hour is quiet, because the room only fits a couple of people and everyone else is told to wait. Here the room holds the crowd, and the crowd changes what the photographs are about: someone is doing a child’s hair in the background, a grandmother is on the edge of the bed with the bouquet on her lap, three conversations are running at once and none of them is being performed for the camera. It is the least staged material of the whole wedding, and it only exists because the door does not have to be closed to anybody.

It also earns you a head start. By the time the ceremony begins, an hour of real gallery is already on the cards — which is exactly the argument for a first look, and why we push for that half hour whenever the timeline can carry it. Two Halves of One Resort, Two Halves of One Wedding Gallery

Sensira runs a family side and an adults side in parallel: kids’ club, aquapark and rooms that sleep seven on one hand; an adults-only restaurant, beds on the sand and suites with their own tubs on the other. Couples usually book it for the first reason and only discover the second one at the wedding.

What it buys you is a guest list you never had to negotiate. The cousins bring their children and the children have somewhere to be all afternoon; the friends who wanted a grown-up trip get one anyway. On the day, that splits the gallery cleanly in two — a bright, noisy, multi-generation afternoon, and a night that belongs to the adults still standing. Two galleries out of one wedding, and neither is a compromise on the other.

The One Line to Add to Your Wedding Contract Before You Sign

Ask the coordinator, in writing, what the resort charges for a wedding photographer it did not hire, and have the answer land in the same email as your date. It is a routine line item at a property this size — sometimes a photographer fee, sometimes a paid day pass — and the only thing that makes it awkward is discovering it late. The Paperwork Decides When Your Ceremony Can Start

A legal civil marriage in Mexico brings witnesses, documents and a stricter clock; plenty of couples handle the legal part at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here that looks identical through the lens and leaves the hour open.
