Who Is Carrying the Details of Your Wedding Day

Barceló keeps the Royal Hideaway name for its most formal properties, and the practical meaning of that on a wedding morning is simple: there is a wedding office whose declared job is to walk you through every detail, and there are no children on the property to be found, fed or fetched. Someone else owns the timings, the seating and the questions.

That matters to us more than it sounds like it should. The single most common reason a wedding portrait looks stiff is that the person in it was interrupted ninety seconds earlier by somebody needing a decision. When the decisions belong to a planner and the guest list is entirely grown up, we get long uninterrupted stretches with the two of you — and uninterrupted is the only condition under which people stop performing and start looking like themselves.

Six Named Venues, and What Each Does to a Wedding Picture

The hotel sits on the Chac Halal stretch of Playacar, and it does not improvise a ceremony site: it offers six, each with a name. The coral-sand beach takes the largest ceremonies, facing open water. Terraza del Deck and Terraza de Spices, both named after the restaurants they belong to, hold outdoor receptions at a scale where you can still hear a speech without amplification. The gardens and the spa’s relaxation area suit a small ceremony under trees. The spa pool becomes an evening venue with the water doing half the work. And the lower lobby, glazed along one side onto the gardens, is offered as an interior ceremony and banquet room.

For a photographer, six named spaces is better news than one enormous lawn, because the day stops being a march and becomes a set of short moves. We work out with you in advance which two or three you are actually using, and the schedule is then written around the walk between them instead of around a map.

The Tent Question Every Beach Wedding Here Has to Answer

The resort is straightforward about it: once a beach or open-air celebration goes past a hundred guests, a tent has to be rented. Nobody tells couples what that does to the pictures, so we will. Under canvas the light becomes soft, even and a little cold, the ceiling caps how high a frame can reach, and the horizon that made you choose a beach in the first place stops appearing behind you. None of that is a disaster — it is simply a different room, and it is lit like one.

What it does change is where the portraits go. On a tented wedding we take the two of you out onto open sand for a stretch of the golden hour, the soft warm light in the hour bracketing sunset, and bring you back before anyone notices. The ceremony itself we normally set about two hours before the sun goes down, adjusted to your date, because sundown drifts by well over an hour across the year here. The Outside-Photographer Line in Your Wedding Contract

Royal Hideaway keeps an in-house photography vendor and charges a fee when you bring your own — the amount is set by the hotel and it is the one figure worth having in writing from the wedding office before you sign anything. Ask early, ask in writing, and budget it beside the photography rather than discovering it in month eight. The question underneath it is worth answering honestly too: what you are actually buying when you pay to bring somebody in. A photographer you chose from a full portfolio, who will meet you months beforehand and hand back every edited image, is a different proposition from a name allocated to your date. Paperwork First, or Only the Ceremony

One early decision governs the whole timeline. A legal civil marriage in Mexico brings documents, witnesses and a stricter clock; a great many couples sign at home instead and hold a symbolic ceremony on the coral sand that photographs exactly the same and leaves the afternoon loose. Settle it before we draft anything, because it decides the earliest hour your ceremony can begin.
