The Two of You Get One Hour. Let’s Make It Count.
You booked Hotel Riu Playacar for the family, and the family is having the week of its life. That is the point — and it is why, around day three, one of you says the quiet part out loud: we have not had ten minutes alone since we landed. A guest wrote to us from this hotel last season: “Our fifteenth anniversary is Thursday, we’re here with my parents and three kids, and I’d love one hour where it’s just us.” She got her hour, and the photographs on her wall are the only proof the trip was hers too.
We’ve photographed thousands of sessions across Playa del Carmen, and that hour is the one we protect hardest. Here is why it exists at the Riu: the sun comes up out of the Caribbean a little after six, and nobody under twelve stirs before eight — which means the sand outside your door belongs to no one but the two of you. Six years and a thousand clients in, we have learned that hour beats any backdrop we could drive you to.
The Sessions Riu Playacar Couples Book Most
Almost everyone who messages us from this hotel is travelling with other people — parents, in-laws, a toddler, a whole tribe that travelled to coincide. The reason for the photographs, though, is almost always just the two of you. These are the three sessions we shoot most often for couples here.
Anniversaries
Half of these trips exist because of a date on the calendar, and that date lands mid-week, between a buffet and a pool day. We meet you on the sand while the rest of the party is asleep and have you back at the table before anyone asks where you went — which is why couples who never planned a session book one. Our anniversary photoshoot guide covers what to wear and how the hour runs.
Vow renewals
Some of you decided this quietly and never told the family. It needs no audience and no ceremony: the two of you, the water, and whatever you want to say. We stay far enough back that it stays yours, close enough that you keep it. Our couples photoshoot guide for Playa del Carmen covers outfits, timing and direction.
The proposal inside the family trip
“She doesn’t know yet” is how these messages open, and here it comes with a complication: her family is on the same floor. That makes the early hour a gift, not a sacrifice — the beach is empty and a photographer on the sand at dawn draws zero attention. You suggest a walk, you kneel, and we are already framing. Our guide to planning a surprise proposal in Playa del Carmen covers the choreography.
What You Take Home From That Hour
One unhurried hour on the sand beside the hotel, before the trip starts asking things of you again.
-
An hour nobody else can claim
The sun clears the water a little after six and the sand stays quiet long after — so you get the warmest light of the day and a frame with nobody else in it.
-
No taxi, no plan, no explanation
The beach is right outside. You walk out, we shoot, you walk back — the only reason an hour alone is realistic on a trip with this many people.
-
Nobody is a model, and it does not matter
Almost nobody who books us has been photographed properly before. There is nothing to apologise for — we direct the whole thing.
-
The family still gets theirs
Want group frames too? The two of you go first, then the crew comes down — one morning, both galleries.
Where Riu Playacar Sits — and Where We Meet You
The hotel sits in Playacar, and the sand in front of it, Playa Playacar, is public beach open to anyone who walks onto it. That matters for one reason: nothing about your morning depends on permission — no pass, no permit, nothing anyone can cancel. We work south of the Cozumel ferry pier, where the beach opens up and the horizon has nothing in it. You are not getting up early for the photographer. You are getting up early because it is the only time this beach is yours.
Kids, Grandparents, and a Session That Ends Before Breakfast
Plenty of couples want both, and the morning carries it: the two of you first, while nobody else is dressed, then the family comes down for the last stretch. The four-year-old never works out it was a photo session, because it is not yet eight o’clock and to him it is just the beach. Everyone is at breakfast on time. Our family session guide is the practical one.
Simple Pricing, No Session Fee
Pricing is refreshingly simple: there is no session fee. You pay $15 USD per photo with a 10-photo minimum ($150 USD), or choose a group package from $200 USD when the whole family wants in — you only pay for the images you love. You can see everything we offer, and hundreds of recent sessions, on our Playa del Carmen photographer page.
Every hotel has its own rules about photography on the property. We know how each one works — message us and we’ll tell you exactly what your options are where you’re staying.
And if the anniversary deserves to look like an event, ask about our signature beach-gown editorial sessions in Playa del Carmen — meters of fabric in the morning breeze, same sand, same hour.
Send us the week you are here and what you are celebrating, and we will come back with a morning. Hundreds of recent couples are on our Playa del Carmen photographer page.

Couple Sessions at Hotel Riu Playacar — FAQ
Neither of us has ever been photographed properly. Is this going to feel awkward?
Almost nobody who books us has been photographed properly before, and they usually apologise for it in the first message. There is nothing to apologise for — we direct the whole thing. You are never asked to pose — we give you something to do, and the pictures happen in between.
We are travelling with our kids and my parents. Can we really slip away for this?
That is what this hour is for. The session happens on the sand beside the hotel — no taxi, no drive, and you are not gone long enough for anyone to notice. We send the meeting pin by WhatsApp the night before, and most couples are back before the family has finished breakfast.
How much does a couple session at Hotel Riu Playacar cost?
There is no session fee. It is $15 USD per photo with a 10-photo minimum ($150 USD), or a group package from $200 USD if the whole family joins for part of the morning. You choose your images from the gallery afterwards and pay only for the ones you love.
Can we do this at sunset over the sea instead?
Not over the sea, and we would rather say so now than sell you an hour that cannot deliver. This coast faces east: the sun rises out of the water in front of the hotel and sets behind the buildings at your back. Late in the day the light on the sand is gone and the beach is busiest — so the early hour wins twice.
Are you affiliated with Hotel Riu Playacar?
No. We are independent photographers who work with guests of Hotel Riu Playacar and the rest of Playacar. You book us directly by WhatsApp.
