Working the ceremony hour backwards from sunset

The whole coast faces east, so the sun sets behind the jungle rather than over the water. In the last ninety minutes of daylight the light comes down the beach from the side, warm and even, and that is where a ceremony belongs: start about ninety minutes before the official sunset and you get comfortable guests, flattering light on the vows and a full golden hour for portraits while cocktails run without you. What you will not get is a sun-setting-into-the-sea frame — that requires a west-facing beach, and there is not one here.

The alternative nobody suggests but that works beautifully is sunrise. On this coast the sun comes straight out of the Caribbean, the beach is empty, and for a small wedding it is the single best light of the day. It asks a lot of guests, so it belongs to ceremonies of twenty people rather than a hundred — and if that is the direction you are heading, our intimate wedding page is the more honest read.

Concessions, vendor fees and who owns the sand

The beach below the high-tide line is federal, but placing chairs, an arch and speakers on it happens under a concession — and along this coast the resort in front of that sand almost always holds it. That is why a Riviera Maya beach wedding is, in practice, a resort wedding: the venue supplies the site, the permissions, the coordinator and the sound. Where it costs you is the photographer: most properties charge an outside-vendor fee or require a day pass for someone not on their in-house list. Two more practicalities. Sound curfews are common and decide where the reception continues after the ceremony. And for the paperwork: almost every international couple marries legally at home and holds a symbolic ceremony here, because a Quintana Roo civil wedding needs a judge, medical tests, four witnesses and apostilled documents. Sargassum, storms and choosing a month honestly

This stretch catches more sargassum than Cancún’s north bay, roughly April to August, and it is very local — one resort can be clear while the next is not. Every serious property rakes its own frontage daily, so a resort beach usually looks fine even in a bad week; the difference is visible in wide shots, so we scout the morning of the wedding and choose the ceremony position accordingly. Hurricane season runs June to November with a September peak. Rain is usually twenty minutes. The question is only whether the decision has been made in advance: which covered space, who calls it, and how long before the ceremony.
