You Got the Invite. Now What Do You Wear?
A beach wedding in Cancun or the Riviera Maya is one of the most beautiful invitations you can receive, and one of the most confusing to dress for. The invitation says "beach formal," but the venue is sand, the temperature is in the 80s, and you have no idea whether heels are a good idea (they are not). This guide decodes the dress code and helps you look polished without melting or sinking.
We are a bilingual photography team based in Cancun, and we have spent more than ten years photographing destination weddings across the Riviera Maya. We see what works on the sand and what guests wish they had known. Couples: share this with your guest list so everyone arrives camera-ready and comfortable.
What the Invitation Actually Means
Beach wedding dress codes use the same words as ballroom weddings, but they mean something looser and lighter. Here is how to read the most common ones.
-
Beach Formal
The dressiest beach code. Think a floor-length or midi dress in a flowing fabric for women, and a linen or lightweight suit (often no tie) for men. Elegant, but breathable, never a heavy tuxedo or a structured floor gown.
-
Cocktail on the Sand
A step down from beach formal. A knee-length or midi cocktail dress, a jumpsuit, or dress pants with a light shirt. Bright colors and prints are welcome here, and footwear can be a dressy flat or wedge.
-
Beach Casual
The most relaxed code, common for welcome dinners and rehearsal beach parties. A sundress, linen shirt, or smart shorts work. Still skip the swimwear, flip-flops, and anything you would wear to lie by the pool.
-
No Dress Code Listed
When in doubt, default to cocktail on the sand and lean lighter rather than heavier. You will almost never be underdressed in a flowing midi dress or a crisp linen shirt, and you will be far more comfortable than in formal wear.
What should women wear to a beach wedding in Mexico?
The winning formula on the Riviera Maya is a flowing midi or maxi dress in a breathable fabric, chiffon, linen, cotton, or a soft jersey, that moves with the ocean breeze instead of fighting it. The sea wind is part of every beach ceremony in Cancun, so a fabric with movement photographs beautifully, while a stiff, structured gown can look heavy and trap heat.
Footwear is where most guests get caught out. Stilettos sink into sand, full stop. Choose block heels, wedges, or flat sandals, and consider walking barefoot for the ceremony itself, almost everyone does on a beach. A practical move: wear comfortable sandals to arrive, then change for portraits and the reception once you are off the open sand.
Pack a wrap, pashmina, or light shawl. The ceremony may be on the beach in full sun, but the reception is often in an air-conditioned ballroom or under palapa shade where the evening breeze picks up. That single layer covers both the chilly AC and the temperature drop after sunset.
What should men wear to a beach wedding?
For men, the go-to is a linen or lightweight suit in a light color, sand, pale blue, light grey, or soft beige, which reads as elegant and reflects heat instead of absorbing it. A tie is often optional at beach weddings; many grooms skip it themselves, so an open collar is usually right unless the invitation specifies formal. If you run warm, a linen shirt with dress trousers and a blazer you can remove is a flexible compromise.
On footwear, leather loafers or dressy leather sandals work far better than heavy dress shoes that fill with sand. Avoid black wool suits and anything you would wear to a winter wedding, the Riviera Maya sun in the afternoon is unforgiving, and you will spend the celebration uncomfortable.
The sand rule: practical footwear wins every time
If you take one thing from this guide, make it this: plan for sand. Heels sink, fine straps fill with grit, and slick soles slide on the slope down to the water. Wedges and flats distribute weight and stay on the surface. Many guests bring two pairs, one to walk and one for the seated reception and group photos, and slip them off entirely for the ceremony. Photographers love a barefoot beach moment; it is genuinely one of the most charming details of a destination wedding.
Dressing for the sun and the heat
Cancun and the Riviera Maya are hot and bright most of the year, and a ceremony that starts in the late afternoon still means a stretch of strong sun. A hat is a smart accessory for an outdoor ceremony, especially for older guests, and sunscreen is non-negotiable even when the sky looks hazy. There is a real trade-off with sleeves: a strapless dress is cooler but offers zero sun protection, while a dress with light sleeves or a flutter cap keeps your shoulders from burning during a long outdoor ceremony. Neither is wrong, just choose with the sun in mind.
A note for the mothers of the couple
Mothers of the bride and groom can dress more formally than other guests while still respecting the beach setting. An elevated midi or full-length gown in a flowing fabric, with a coordinating wrap, hits the sweet spot, refined enough to stand apart in photographs, light enough to stay comfortable on the sand. Skip the heavy beading and the structured floor gown you would wear at a hotel ballroom; both photograph as too formal against an open beach and are miserable in the heat.
What colors should guests wear (and avoid)?
The one firm rule: do not wear white, ivory, or cream. That palette belongs to the couple, and a white dress against a beach backdrop reads exactly like a wedding gown in photos. Beyond that, the beach loves color. Bright tropical tones, coral, turquoise, sunset orange, deep green, and warm yellows, photograph beautifully against the sea and sand and feel right for the setting. Soft pastels and earthy terracottas also work wonderfully. If the couple shared a palette to avoid (some ask guests to skip a specific color), honor it.

What should guests bring to a beach wedding?
A few small things make a big difference on the sand. Pack sunglasses for the ceremony, a folding fan for the warmest part of the day, and bug spray for the evening, mosquitoes and sand flies appear after sunset along the Riviera Maya coast. A travel-size sunscreen, a hair tie for the wind, and a small clutch you can hold while walking on sand round out the kit. And remember the evening temperature drop: beach receptions cool down noticeably once the sun is gone, which is exactly why that wrap or light jacket earns its place in your bag.

Beach Wedding Guest Attire FAQ
What does "beach formal" mean for a wedding guest?
Beach formal is the dressiest beach code: a flowing floor-length or midi dress for women, and a linen or lightweight suit (often without a tie) in a light color for men. It is elegant but breathable, never a heavy tuxedo or a structured ballroom gown that traps heat on the sand.
Can guests wear heels on the sand?
Stilettos and thin heels sink into sand and are a struggle to walk in, so skip them. Wedges and block heels distribute your weight and stay on the surface, and flat sandals are always safe. Many guests go barefoot for the beach ceremony and change into nicer shoes for the reception.
Is it okay to wear sandals to a beach wedding?
Yes. Dressy sandals are perfectly appropriate and often the smartest choice on sand. For men, leather sandals or loafers work well; for women, embellished flat sandals or wedges look polished. Just keep them dressier than flip-flops or anything you would wear to the pool.
Can guests wear white to a beach wedding?
No. White, ivory, and cream belong to the couple, and a white outfit against a beach backdrop reads like a wedding gown in photos. Choose almost any other color instead, bright tropical tones and soft pastels both photograph beautifully against the sea and sand.
What should men wear to a beach wedding in Mexico?
A linen or lightweight suit in a light color (sand, pale blue, light grey) is ideal, usually with an open collar since ties are often optional at beach weddings. Pair it with leather loafers or dressy sandals, and avoid heavy black wool suits that overheat in the Riviera Maya sun.
Will a beach wedding get cold in the evening?
Often, yes. Beach receptions cool down noticeably after sunset as the ocean breeze picks up, and indoor reception spaces are usually air-conditioned. Bring a wrap, pashmina, or light jacket so you stay comfortable from the sunny ceremony through the evening celebration.
