What to Wear and Bring to Your Flying Dress Photoshoot on a Cozumel Cruise Day

You have a few precious hours in Cozumel and you want to spend them on something you will remember forever — a Flying Dress photoshoot on the beach. The good news is there is almost nothing to pack. The dress itself is included, your photographer guides every pose, and the whole session runs about 60 to 90 minutes. But a handful of small choices — what you wear underneath, what is on your feet, and what fits in a light beach bag — make the difference between a relaxed morning and a scramble. Here is exactly what to wear and bring so you can step off the ship, shoot, and be back on board with time to spare.

The short answer: travel light

Because the Flying Dress is provided in sizes XS to XXXL and is included in your package, there is nothing heavy to carry off the ship. Each session also includes your photographer and a clothing assistant who handles the dress so it catches the wind beautifully. Your job is simple: wear the right swimsuit underneath, bring easy-to-remove sandals, and pack a few beach essentials. Everything else is on us.

What to wear under the dress: a strapless swimsuit

The Flying Dress is a beach session, so the smartest thing to wear underneath is a swimsuit. The dress is light, airy and a little sheer by design — that is what makes it float so dramatically in the wind — so what you wear under it matters more than you might think.

Our recommendation is a strapless, backless swimsuit that does not cover your shoulders or the center of your chest. That way nothing peeks out at the neckline or along your back, and the photos read as one clean, flowing silhouette. Bandeau tops, strapless one-pieces and bikinis with thin or removable straps all work well. If you only have a swimsuit with shoulder straps, you can often tuck or slip them down for the shoot — but a strapless option is the easiest way to keep the look seamless.

Choose a color you feel confident in. Most of the time it stays hidden, but a tone that blends with your dress color gives you the most flexibility for poses where the fabric lifts.

Go barefoot — and bring flip flops to get there

Flying Dress is an artistic, barefoot session. Bare feet look natural against the sand and the surf, and they let you move freely between the different parts of the spot. That is why you do not need fancy footwear for the photos themselves.

What you do need is a pair of flip flops or sandals that slip on and off in a second. Our main beach in Cozumel has soft sand, a stretch of rocks that creates beautiful composition, and the water's edge — and you will move between all three during the session. Easy sandals let you walk comfortably to each spot and then step out of them the moment the camera is ready. Skip lace-up shoes; they only slow you down.

Sun protection for a beach morning

Cozumel mornings are bright and the best light is early — we usually recommend an 8:00 a.m. start, when the sun is soft and the public beach is still quiet. Even so, you will be outdoors on the sand, so pack sunscreen and reapply before you head to the beach. A hat or sunglasses for between shots keeps you comfortable while your photographer resets, and a small bottle of water is always welcome in the Caribbean heat.

Arrive ready: hair and makeup before you dock

This is the one tip that makes the biggest difference on a cruise day. The beach we use is a public beach with no restrooms and no changing rooms, so there is nowhere to get ready once you arrive. If you would like a polished look, come with your hair and makeup already done — many guests get ready on the ship before stepping ashore. Wear your swimsuit underneath your cover-up or day clothes so you are photoshoot-ready the moment you reach the meeting point.

Keep your hair in a style that moves well. Loose waves and natural texture photograph beautifully in the breeze, the same wind that lifts the dress.

A quick packing list for your cruise day

Here is everything worth bringing in a light beach bag:

A strapless or backless swimsuit to wear under the dress — no shoulder or chest-center coverage so nothing shows.

Flip flops or easy slip-on sandals so you can move between the sand, rocks and water and step out of them for a barefoot shoot.

Sunscreen, applied before the beach, plus a hat or sunglasses for between shots.

A small bottle of water and your phone for the meeting point directions.

Hair and makeup done before you arrive, since the public beach has no restrooms or changing area.

What you do not need to bring

You can leave the big bags on the ship. You do not need to bring a dress — yours is included and your clothing assistant brings it to the beach. You do not need props, heels, or a full outfit change. Because your edited photos arrive within 72 hours through a private online gallery, there is nothing to wait around for in port either. You simply enjoy the session and head back to your ship.

One last thing: it is a rare experience

A Flying Dress session is something genuinely different to do in the Mexican Caribbean — very few people do one each year, which is part of what makes it feel so special. It is not the typical snorkel tour or beach day. As the original creators of the Flying Dress experience in the Riviera Maya, including Cozumel, we keep every detail handled so all you have to do is show up dressed right and ready to enjoy it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear under the Flying Dress for my Cozumel shoot?

Wear a swimsuit, since the session is on the beach. We recommend a strapless, backless swimsuit that does not cover your shoulders or the center of your chest, so nothing peeks out under the dress, which is light and a little sheer by design. Bandeau tops and strapless one-pieces work great; if your swimsuit has straps, you can usually slip them down to keep the silhouette clean.

Do I do the photoshoot barefoot, and what shoes should I bring?

Yes, Flying Dress is an artistic, barefoot session, so bare feet look most natural against the sand and surf. Bring flip flops or slip-on sandals that come off in a second, since you will move between the sand, a stretch of rocks, and the water's edge at the spot. Easy sandals let you walk comfortably to each spot and step out of them the moment the camera is ready.

Do I need to bring my own dress?

No, there is nothing to carry off the ship. The Flying Dress is included in your package and provided in sizes XS to XXXL, and your clothing assistant brings it to the beach and manages it so it catches the wind beautifully. Every session also includes your photographer, so all you bring is your swimsuit, sandals, and a few beach essentials.

What else should I pack for a cruise-day beach session?

Keep it light: sunscreen applied before you head to the beach, a hat or sunglasses for between shots, a small bottle of water for the Caribbean heat, and your phone for the meeting-point directions. Because your edited photos arrive within 72 hours through a private online gallery, there is nothing to wait around for in port.

Should I get hair and makeup done before I leave the ship?

Yes, if you would like a polished look. The beach we use is a public beach with no restrooms or changing rooms, so come with your hair and makeup already done and your swimsuit on under your cover-up. The best light is early, around 8:00 a.m., when the sun is soft and the beach is still quiet, so arriving camera-ready keeps everything relaxed.

How early should I book my Cozumel cruise-day session?

Book before you sail. Cozumel sees several ships on busy days and our cruise-day slots fill quickly, so reserving early guarantees your time. You reserve with just a $30 deposit and pay the balance in cash on the day. Send us your ship name and all-aboard time over WhatsApp and we build the schedule around your stop.
