Why Playa del Carmen Is Perfect for a Flying Dress Photoshoot

Playa del Carmen sits halfway down the Riviera Maya, a beach town where the sand is a few blocks from your hotel, the water runs turquoise and the sun comes up straight over the Caribbean. For a Flying Dress photoshoot — a long gown thrown into the breeze against an open sea — that is a very good starting point. Here is what makes the town work so well for the dress, and how we plan a session around it.

The sun rises over the water

Playa del Carmen’s coast faces east. The sun comes up over the sea and sets behind the town, so the light you want for a Flying Dress session arrives first thing in the morning: low, soft and directly in front of you as you face the water. We recommend an 8 a.m. start, when the beach is still quiet and the light is gentle on skin and fabric alike.

It also means there is no sunset dropping into the ocean here — worth knowing before you picture the shot. The morning is the reliable window, and it is a beautiful one.

Beaches you can walk to

Most of the town’s best sand is reachable on foot from Quinta Avenida. Playa Mamitas, at Calle 28 Norte, gives you turquoise water and palm-lined frames. Playa Fundadores, at the north end by the ferry pier, is calm and private at sunrise, before the first ferries and the crowds arrive. For a session that starts early, being able to walk to the beach is a real advantage.

Our guide to the best photo spots in Playa del Carmen goes through each beach and what it is good for.

A cenote right beside the sea

Punta Esmeralda, near Calle 112, is a public beach with a coastal cenote: freshwater pooling a few steps from the Caribbean. It gives you two textures in one location without leaving town — something you will not find on the beaches of Cancún. If you want privacy above all, Playa Xcalacoco, roughly nine kilometres north, has open, empty sand at first light; it needs a short drive, so we plan it as its own session.

A good base for the whole Riviera Maya

Playa del Carmen is about 45 to 50 minutes by road south of Cancún International Airport, with Tulum, the cenotes and the ferry to Cozumel all within easy reach. Many travelers stay here precisely because it puts the rest of the coast within a day trip — and a Flying Dress morning fits neatly into that kind of itinerary.

How a session here works

The dress is included, in sizes XS to XXXL, along with your photographer and a clothing assistant who handles the fabric so it flies at the right moment. A session runs about an hour. Afterwards we send you a preview gallery of all the shots, around 60: with the $169 USD package you choose 16 to be edited; with the $219 USD package you receive 40 edited photos, all the unedited shots and an Instagram reel. Edited photos arrive within 72 hours in a private online gallery.

You reserve with a $30 USD deposit and pay the balance on the day. Family or friends can join the session at no extra charge.

If you are staying in Cancún

You do not have to travel for the dress. The same session on Cancún’s Hotel Zone beaches starts at $149 USD. Come to Playa del Carmen if you are staying here, or if you want this particular backdrop — tell us where you are staying and we will suggest the easier option.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Playa del Carmen a good place for a Flying Dress photoshoot?

Yes. The coast faces east, so the morning light comes in low and soft over the water, the town beaches are within walking distance of most hotels, and Punta Esmeralda adds a coastal cenote beside the sea. We recommend an 8 a.m. start, when the beach is quiet.

Can I get a sunset over the ocean in Playa del Carmen?

No. The sun sets behind the town, not over the sea. The reliable window here is the morning, when the sun rises over the water and the beaches are at their emptiest.

Which beach do you use for Flying Dress in Playa del Carmen?

It depends on the look you want and where you are staying. Playa Mamitas and Playa Fundadores are walkable from the centre; Punta Esmeralda has a coastal cenote; Playa Xcalacoco, about nine kilometres north, is the most private. We agree on the meeting point with you before you pay the deposit.

How much does a Flying Dress session in Playa del Carmen cost?

$169 USD with 16 edited photos, or $219 USD with 40 edited photos, all unedited shots and an Instagram reel. The dress, the photographer and a clothing assistant are included. A $30 USD deposit holds your date and the balance is paid on the day.

How long does it take to get my photos?

Your edited photos arrive within 72 hours in a private online gallery, after you choose your favourites from the preview gallery.
