The dress is included — so what do you actually wear?
Let's start with the good news. As the original creators of the Flying Dress experience in the Riviera Maya, we provide the dress itself in sizes XS to XXXL, and it comes with your package along with your photographer and a clothing assistant who manages the fabric so it catches the sea breeze beautifully. That means you don't shop for an outfit, you don't pack a gown, and you don't carry anything heavy across on the ferry. The only thing you need to think about is the one layer nobody sees — what goes underneath.
Wear a strapless or backless swimsuit underneath
This is the single most important tip, and it makes a real difference in the final images. The Flying Dress is a light, airy, often sheer fabric designed to billow in the wind, so what you wear beneath it can show through in bright Caribbean light. The trick our most photo-ready clients use is to wear a strapless or backless one-piece swimsuit in a tone close to your skin or to the dress color. Because the dress is frequently strapless or open at the back itself, a regular bikini with straps or a racerback can peek out and break the clean, weightless look we are creating.
A seamless strapless swimsuit keeps everything supported and smooth while staying completely invisible under the flowing fabric. You arrive already wearing it, so there is no changing room to worry about and no fuss on the beach — you simply step into the dress and you are ready.
Go barefoot — it's a beach session
Flying Dress sessions are shot barefoot on the sand, and that is part of what makes them feel so free. There are no heels to balance in and nothing to fuss with at the water's edge. Walk down to the beach in comfortable sandals you can slip off in a second, leave them with your bag, and let your feet sink into the soft white sand of Playa Centro, right beside the famous Playa Norte. Bare feet photograph beautifully against the turquoise water, and they keep you steady and relaxed while your photographer guides each pose.
Coming over on the ferry? Pack this small bag
Many of our Isla Mujeres clients fly in from the United States, Canada and Europe and come across as a day trip, taking the Ultramar ferry from Cancún (Puerto Juárez or Playa Tortugas) for the roughly twenty-to-thirty-minute crossing. If that's you, the goal is to travel light but smart. Here is the short packing list that covers everything:
- Reef-safe sunscreen. Apply it before the session and bring it along — the Caribbean sun is strong, and you'll want to reapply after the shoot when you're exploring the island.
- A hat and sunglasses. Not for the photos, but for shade between shots and for the ferry deck. A wide-brim hat is lovely to keep you comfortable while you wait for the perfect light.
- Easy slip-off sandals. Skip the laces and buckles. You'll be stepping on and off the sand, so flat sandals or flip-flops you can remove in one motion are ideal.
- A light cover-up or sarong. Easy to throw on over your swimsuit for the ferry ride and the walk to the beach.
- A small towel and a water bottle. To rinse off the sand and stay hydrated under the sun.
- Your phone and a little cash. For the ferry, a taxi or golf-cart, and a snack afterward.
If you're staying on the island instead of day-tripping, the list is even shorter — just arrive in your swimsuit with sunscreen on. Either way, transport assistance is available on request, so let us know and we can help coordinate the meeting point so you're not navigating the crossing alone.
Arrive ready: hair, makeup and a few finishing touches
You don't need anything elaborate, but a little preparation goes a long way in the photos. Soft, natural makeup that won't melt in the heat works best, and loose, slightly wind-friendly hair always looks gorgeous as the dress moves around you — overly structured styles tend to fight the breeze rather than dance with it. If you'd like a polished look, come with your hair and makeup already done, since beach sessions move quickly to catch the best light. Want jewelry? Keep it simple and weightless. The dress and the setting do most of the work.
The best light, and why it shapes your timing
The most flattering Isla Mujeres photos happen early in the morning, which is why we recommend an 8:00 a.m. session — the light is soft and the beach at Playa Centro is calm and uncrowded. That timing matters for what you wear, too — early sessions can feel cool with the sea breeze, so a light cover-up for before and after keeps you comfortable while you wait for that perfect glow. The session itself runs about an hour, and the dry season from November to April brings the most reliable conditions for a calm, picture-perfect morning.
What you genuinely don't need to bring
It's worth saying plainly, because it saves a lot of overpacking: you do not need to bring a dress, props, or special equipment. The flowing gown, the photographer, and the clothing assistant are all part of your session. Family and friends are welcome to come along at no extra cost, so they can carry your bag, hold your cover-up, and cheer you on between shots. Everything else — the posing, the dress, the timing around the light — we handle for you.
Ready for your barefoot hour in paradise
That's the whole list: a strapless swimsuit underneath, bare feet on the sand, and a small bag for your ferry day. The dress and the rest are on us. Tell us your travel dates and whether you're coming over for the day or staying on the island, and we'll have everything ready for an effortless Flying Dress session on Isla Mujeres.
