How to Get to the Tulum Beach for Your Flying Dress Photoshoot

Tulum has the most photogenic beach on the Riviera Maya — turquoise water, talcum-white sand and the wild, untamed beach jungle that made it famous around the world. It is the dream backdrop for a Flying Dress photoshoot, and our favourite spot of all is Playa La Roca, the stretch named for its dramatic rock formation. Most of the travellers we photograph fly in from the United States, Canada and Europe, and the one thing they all ask before booking is simply: how do I actually get there? The good news is that it is easy. Whether you are flying into Cancun or the new Tulum airport, and whether you prefer a taxi, an Uber or the local bus, here is exactly how to reach the beach for your session — and how we coordinate the meeting point so the morning runs without a hitch.

Where exactly is the Tulum beach?

Tulum is divided into two areas. There is Tulum Pueblo, the town set just back from the coast along the main highway, and the Tulum beach zone, the long ribbon of sand and beach clubs that runs along the Caribbean. The Flying Dress photoshoot happens on the beach, so the beach zone is where you are heading. Most visitors stay either in the beach hotels along that strip or in town a few minutes inland, and both make getting to the session simple.

Flying into Cancun (CUN)?

Cancun International is still the airport most of our clients arrive through, with the widest choice of flights. The Tulum beach is roughly an hour and a half to two hours south by car, a smooth drive down the highway through the heart of the Riviera Maya. From the airport you can take a private transfer, a rental car, or the ADO bus, which runs directly from Cancun airport to Tulum and is a comfortable, budget-friendly option. Because of the distance, most people who fly into Cancun choose to stay overnight in Tulum rather than make it a same-day round trip — that way you wake up minutes from the beach and the session feels relaxed, not rushed.

Flying into Tulum (TQO)?

Tulum now has its own international airport, and if your flights allow it, this is the easiest way in. From the Tulum airport the beach zone is only about twenty minutes away by taxi or Uber. You can land, check into your hotel and be on the sand for an early-morning session the next day with almost no travel in between. For anyone building a trip around the Flying Dress experience, flying straight into Tulum keeps everything close and effortless.

Playa La Roca — the spot we recommend

Of all the public beaches in Tulum, the one we love most for a Flying Dress session is Playa La Roca, named for the striking rock formation that gives it its character. It is not just beautiful — it is the spot that lets us shoot the most spectacular images. From here your photographer can work from a low angle, camera down near the sand looking up, so the dress towers above you against the sky and the whole frame turns dramatic and larger than life. That low, upward perspective is the single biggest reason La Roca produces the most jaw-dropping Flying Dress photos in Tulum.

Taxi, Uber or bus — getting to the beach itself

Playa La Roca and the other Tulum public beaches are reachable by taxi, Uber or local bus, so you have options whatever your budget. Here is how each one works:

Taxi

Taxis are everywhere in Tulum and are the most straightforward choice. From town to the beach zone is a short, inexpensive ride. Agree on the fare before you set off, as Tulum taxis often do not use meters, and ask your hotel for the going rate so you know what to expect.

Uber

Ride-share apps operate in the Tulum area and many visitors find them convenient for getting from their hotel to the beach. Availability can vary by time of day and exact location, so if you are heading out for an early-morning session it is worth booking your ride a little ahead or asking your hotel to arrange a taxi as a backup.

Local bus and colectivo

For the budget-minded, colectivos — the shared vans that run up and down the highway — and local buses connect Tulum town with the surrounding area inexpensively. They are a great way to travel like a local, though for an early start most people find a taxi or Uber simpler and quicker.

Where do we meet?

Once your session is booked we agree on a clear meeting point on the beach and send you simple directions, so there is no guesswork on the morning of your shoot. Playa La Roca is our recommended spot, and we coordinate the time and place around where you are staying. If you tell us your hotel, we will point you to the closest, easiest access point so the trip from your room to the sand is as short as possible.

Prefer a private resort beach?

While our standard Tulum sessions take place on the beautiful public beaches, we can also arrange a photoshoot on a private resort beach on request. If you are staying at a beachfront hotel and would rather shoot right outside your door, or you simply want a more secluded setting, just let us know when you book and we will plan the session around it.

Tips for getting there smoothly

Stay in Tulum if you can. Whether you fly into Cancun or Tulum, basing yourself in or near the beach zone means the morning of your shoot involves only a short ride, not a long drive.

Plan for an 8:00 a.m. start. We recommend shooting at eight in the morning — the light is soft, the sea is calm and the beach is still quiet, the ideal window for a relaxed session at Playa La Roca. Arrange your transport the night before, confirming a taxi with your hotel or pre-booking your ride so the early start is effortless.

Come barefoot-ready. The session is shot barefoot on the sand, and under the airy dress we recommend a strapless or backless swimsuit so nothing shows through. There is nothing else to carry — the dress is included.

Tell us your hotel. The more we know about where you are staying, the closer and easier we can make the meeting point.

The beach is closer than you think

Reaching the Tulum beach for your Flying Dress photoshoot is genuinely easy — a short ride from town, twenty minutes from the Tulum airport, or a scenic drive south from Cancun. Tell us your travel plans and where you are staying, and we will handle the meeting point so all you have to think about is stepping onto that famous white sand.

What should I bring and wear for a Tulum beach session?

There is very little to carry — the Flying Dress is included in sizes XS to XXXL, along with your photographer and a clothing assistant. The session is shot barefoot on the sand, and under the airy dress we recommend a strapless or backless swimsuit so nothing shows through. Just add sunscreen and a hat for between shots.
