The Best Time for a Flying Dress Photoshoot in Playa del Carmen

In Playa del Carmen the question of when to shoot has a clearer answer than almost anywhere else on the coast, because of one geographic fact: the beach faces east. Here is how that shapes the best hour for a Flying Dress photoshoot, how long the session takes, and how to choose your day.

The short answer: 8 a.m.

We recommend starting your Flying Dress session at 8 in the morning. The light is soft and flattering, the air is still cool, and the beach is calm and quiet — before the beach clubs open and before the first ferries fill the north end of town.

Why the morning, and not the sunset

Playa del Carmen’s shoreline runs north to south and faces the open Caribbean. The sun rises over the water and sets behind the town, so the classic picture of a sunset dropping into the sea does not happen here. What you get instead is sunrise light coming in low over the water, in front of you as you face the sea — exactly the kind of light that makes a flowing gown glow.

By midday the Riviera Maya sun is high and strong and casts hard shadows across the face, so we plan around it rather than through it.

The session runs about an hour

A Flying Dress session takes about an hour, which is plenty of time to work through poses and let the dress catch the breeze several times over. With an 8 a.m. start you are finished before the beach gets busy, with the rest of the day free for Quinta Avenida, a cenote or a trip to Cozumel.

The best season: November to April

The dry season, from November through April, brings the most reliable conditions: calmer skies and steadier light. That said, Playa del Carmen is photogenic all year, and a morning session sidesteps much of the afternoon cloud that builds in the warmer months.

Weather and sargassum

We watch the forecast and the sargassum reports before every session and keep you updated. If the weather or the beach conditions are not right on your day, we reschedule at no cost or move to a clearer spot nearby. Booking your session early in your trip leaves room to do that if you need it.

Choosing your day

If you are flying in, avoid booking the morning after a late arrival; a rested first or second full day works best. If you are combining the shoot with a Cozumel or Tulum day trip, put the photoshoot first — the early start leaves the rest of the day open. Our guide to the best photo spots in Playa del Carmen explains which beach suits which hour.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of day for a Flying Dress photoshoot in Playa del Carmen?

Early morning, with an 8 a.m. start. The coast faces east, so this is when the sun is over the water, the light is soft and the beach is at its quietest.

Can we shoot at sunset instead?

You can shoot in the afternoon, but the sun sets behind the town rather than over the sea, so there is no sunset-over-the-water picture in Playa del Carmen. For the dress and the turquoise water, the morning is the reliable window.

How long does the session last?

About an hour. That gives enough time for several looks and poses while the light is at its best.

What is the best time of year?

The dry season, from November to April, brings the steadiest conditions. Sessions run all year, and a morning start avoids much of the afternoon cloud in the warmer months.

What happens if the weather or sargassum is bad on my day?

We watch the forecast and sargassum reports and keep you updated. If conditions are not right, we reschedule at no cost or move to a clearer spot nearby.
