Why Isla Mujeres is made for a Flying Dress photoshoot
The whole island is small enough to cross in a few minutes, yet it packs in some of the most photogenic shoreline in the Mexican Caribbean. The water shifts from clear shallows to deep blue, the sand stays pale and fine, and the pace is gentle — no jet-ski crowds, no wall of resorts. For a Flying Dress shoot, where the gown needs space and the backdrop does most of the work, that combination is hard to beat. Most of our visitors arrive by the Ultramar ferry from Cancun (Puerto Juarez or Playa Tortugas, about a 20-to-30-minute crossing), either as a day trip or while staying on the island — and many of them travel in from the United States, Canada and Europe. If you need a hand getting there, transport assistance is available on request — we can help coordinate the ferry, meeting points and ground transport so the morning runs smoothly.
Playa Centro — our main recommended spot
If there is one place we point almost every Flying Dress session toward, it is Playa Centro, the calm stretch of sand right beside the world-famous Playa Norte. Sitting just steps from a beach regularly ranked among the best in the Caribbean, it offers the two things that happen to be perfect for a Flying Dress photoshoot: powder-soft white sand and turquoise water so shallow you can wade out a long way while it stays calm, clear and waist-deep. The seabed is flat and gentle, the colour is almost unreal, and there is room to let a long gown billow without anything cluttering the frame.
Playa Centro is our go-to for bright, classic, postcard-Caribbean images — the kind where the dress, the sky and the sea all sing in the same key — but on a quieter, more workable spot than the busiest part of Playa Norte itself. You get the same iconic look the island is famous for, with space to move. Because of how the light falls, we start early in the morning to catch the softest light on the emptiest sand.
Playa Norte, right next door
Playa Norte is the beach that put Isla Mujeres on the map, and Playa Centro sits right alongside it — so that famous turquoise water and pale sand are the very backdrop you shoot against. It is worth knowing as the landmark everyone recognises and the reason this corner of the island is so photogenic: we simply set up on the calmer, more private Playa Centro just beside it, where there is more room for the dress and fewer people in the frame.
Which spot should you choose?
The honest answer is: it depends entirely on the picture you want. As a simple guide:
Choose Playa Centro if you dream of bright, airy, quintessential Caribbean images — pale sand, glowing turquoise shallows, a long gown floating against an open sky. It is our main recommendation and the most iconic look the island offers, right beside Playa Norte.
Ask about a quieter alternative if you want something more secluded and dramatic — richer colour, a romantic or editorial feel, and the sense that the beach belongs only to you. We know the island well and can tailor the exact spot to your dress colour and style.
You do not have to decide alone. When you book, we talk through your dress colour, the style you love and the time of day, then recommend the location that will make your photos sing. Every spot on Isla Mujeres is chosen around the look you are going for.
The best time of day for your session
Light is everything on Isla Mujeres. We recommend starting at 8 in the morning — the window when the light is soft and flattering, the colours are at their most beautiful, and the beach is calm and quiet. A session runs about an hour, which is plenty of time to move through poses and let the dress catch the breeze. If you are coming over for the day, plan the ferry around that window and we will handle the rest. The dry season from November to April brings the most reliable conditions, with calmer skies and steadier light.
What to wear and bring for a beach session
A few small things make a big difference on the sand. Flying Dress sessions are shot barefoot, so there are no shoes to worry about. Underneath the dress, wear a strapless or backless swimsuit so nothing shows through the airy, flowing fabric. The dress itself is included in your package and provided in sizes XS to XXXL, so there is nothing to carry over on the ferry — just bring sunscreen, a hat for between shots, and water. If you would like a polished finish, arrive with hair and makeup done; we will guide you through everything else.
Groups, bachelorettes and families are welcome
Isla Mujeres is a wonderful place to celebrate together, and we love photographing groups, bachelorette parties and families on its beaches. Group discounts are available with a personalised quote, and for larger groups we split everyone into smaller subgroups on staggered start times — for example 8, 9 and 10 in the morning — with several photographers, one per person, so it stays dynamic and nobody waits around; as one round of about an hour wraps up, the next steps in. Family and friends are always welcome in the session at no extra cost, whether they are stepping into frame or simply cheering you on.
Ready to shoot the beaches of Isla Mujeres
From the glowing shallows of Playa Centro, right beside the iconic Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres gives a Flying Dress photoshoot a backdrop that is hard to match anywhere in the Caribbean. As the original creators of the Flying Dress experience in the Riviera Maya, we know exactly which spot will give you the images you are dreaming of. Tell us the look you love and your travel dates, and we will plan the perfect session around it.
