The Best Beaches and Spots in Tulum for a Flying Dress Photoshoot

Tulum is the most photogenic stretch of the Riviera Maya, and it earned that reputation honestly — turquoise water, sand as fine as powder, and the wild beach vegetation that made the town famous around the world. That same untamed, boho-chic backdrop is what makes Tulum so magical for a Flying Dress photoshoot. The question is never whether the scenery will be beautiful; it is which spot gives you the most spectacular images. Our answer, almost every time, is Playa La Roca — the beach named for its striking rock formation, and our favourite spot in Tulum for the most dramatic Flying Dress photos of all. Here is our guide to the best places in Tulum for a session — starting with Playa La Roca, plus the other public beaches you can reach by taxi or Uber, the private resort beaches we can arrange on request, and how we choose the right one for you.

Why Tulum is made for the Flying Dress

Most beach destinations give you sand and sea. Tulum gives you sand, sea, and that signature wild beauty — sea grapes leaning over the dunes, palms bending in the breeze, and a jungle-meets-ocean atmosphere you do not find anywhere else on the coast. When a flowing dress catches the wind against that boho backdrop, the result is effortless and editorial at once. As the original creators of the Flying Dress experience in the Riviera Maya, we have shot every kind of light and every kind of beach here, and Tulum remains our favourite for images that feel both relaxed and timeless.

Playa La Roca — our star spot in Tulum

If you want the single most spectacular Flying Dress photo Tulum can give you, the answer is Playa La Roca. It takes its name from the dramatic rock formation known as "La Roca" rising from the sand, and it is, hands down, our favourite spot on the whole coast. What makes it so special is the angle it lets us shoot. By placing the camera low and shooting upward — a low, dramatic perspective our photographers call contrapicada — the dress towers above you against the open sky, the fabric reads as enormous and weightless, and the rock anchors the frame with real character. That low-angle, looking-up perspective is the secret behind the most dramatic, jaw-dropping images we make in Tulum, and Playa La Roca is the spot that delivers it best.

It is a public beach, so there is no resort reservation needed — just a short taxi or Uber ride from town or your hotel, and we meet you there. When clients ask us where to shoot for the most impressive photos, this is always the spot we recommend first.

Other public beaches you can reach by taxi, Uber or bus

Playa La Roca is the standout, but it is far from your only option. Tulum has beautiful public beaches all along the coast, and they are easy to reach by taxi, Uber or local bus from wherever you are staying. We meet you at a calm, photogenic stretch away from the busiest crowds and handle the rest. These public spots are where the wild vegetation, the open dunes and that famous powder-soft sand come together — exactly the boho look Tulum is known for.

Open beach with wild dunes and sea grapes

If you want the quintessential Tulum frame — barefoot on pale sand with that untamed greenery framing you — an open public beach is perfect. The natural vegetation gives depth and texture to every shot, and the dress reads beautifully against the soft palette of sand, sky and turquoise water.

Driftwood, palms and natural textures

Tulum's beaches are dotted with weathered driftwood, swaying palms and rustic natural elements that add character without ever feeling staged. These details are what give a Tulum gallery its unmistakable boho-chic signature, and they work especially well with earthy or jewel-toned dresses.

Private resort beaches, arranged on request

For couples and clients who want a more secluded, manicured setting, we can also arrange Flying Dress sessions on a private resort beach by request. A resort beach trades a little of the wild texture for polish and privacy — tidy sand, fewer passers-by, and the convenience of staying close to your hotel. If you are already booked at a beachfront property in Tulum and would prefer to shoot right where you are staying, just let us know and we will plan around it.

The cenote and jungle angle — a Tulum signature

Beyond the beach, Tulum offers something no other Flying Dress destination can: dramatic cenote and jungle backdrops just minutes inland. A Flying Dress against the deep blue water and stone of a nearby cenote is a genuinely unique image, and it is one of the things that sets a Tulum session apart. We can organise this for you on request — though it deserves its own deep dive, so we will save the full how-to for another post. For now, just know the option exists, and it is spectacular.

Which beach or spot should you choose?

The right location depends on the look you are after, and that is exactly the conversation we have with you before the session. Here is how we usually guide it:

For the most dramatic, show-stopping images, we head to Playa La Roca and shoot from a low, looking-up angle (contrapicada) so the dress towers against the sky beside that signature rock. For a soft, romantic and airy feel, we choose an open public beach where the wind moves freely and the dress floats against a clean horizon. For a rich, editorial mood, we lean into the wild vegetation, driftwood and natural textures that give Tulum its boho identity. For privacy or convenience, a private resort beach keeps everything close to your hotel. And for something genuinely one-of-a-kind, the cenote angle brings drama no beach can match. Tell us the vibe you want — and the colour of your dress — and we match the spot to it.

Getting to Tulum and the best time of day

Tulum beach sits about an hour and a half to two hours from Cancún International Airport (CUN), or roughly twenty minutes from the new Tulum Airport (TQO). We welcome travellers from all over — many of our guests fly in from the United States, Canada and Europe — and most stay in Tulum or come over from elsewhere in the Riviera Maya, from where Playa La Roca and the other public beaches are a short ride away. For light, the sweet spot is around 8 a.m.: the sun is soft and golden, the sea is calm and the beach is still quiet, which is exactly when that low-angle Playa La Roca shot looks its most magical. The golden hour before sunset is a beautiful second choice. The dry season from November to April brings the most reliable conditions, with clear skies and gentle water.

What to wear under the dress, and what to bring

We shoot barefoot on the sand, so leave the shoes behind. Under the airy, flowing dress, wear a strapless or backless swimsuit so nothing shows through the light fabric. The Flying Dress itself is included in your package and provided in sizes XS to XXXL, along with your photographer and a clothing assistant who manages the dress so it catches the wind beautifully. Bring sunscreen and a hat for between shots, and come with hair and makeup done if you would like a polished look — we handle everything else.

Bringing family, friends or a group

Tulum is wonderful for more than just solo portraits. Family, friends and partners are welcome at no extra cost, and for bachelorette parties, group trips and larger celebrations we offer group discounts with a personalised quote. Whether it is just you on an open beach at sunrise or a whole group laughing in the surf, the wild Tulum backdrop makes every frame feel like a postcard.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best beach in Tulum for a Flying Dress photoshoot?

Our favourite spot is Playa La Roca, named for its dramatic rock formation. It is the best place in Tulum for the most spectacular photos because it lets us shoot from a low, looking-up angle — what we call contrapicada — so the dress towers against the sky and looks truly dramatic. It is a public beach, just a short taxi or Uber ride away. If you prefer a softer, more romantic feel we can also choose an open beach where the dress floats against a clean horizon, but for the most jaw-dropping images, Playa La Roca is the one we recommend.

Can I shoot on a public beach in Tulum, or do I need a resort?

You do not need a resort. Our star spot, Playa La Roca, is a public beach, and Tulum has many more beautiful public beaches all along the coast that you can reach by taxi, Uber or local bus. We meet you at a calm, photogenic stretch away from the busiest crowds. If you would prefer a more secluded setting, we can also arrange a session on a private resort beach by request.

Can you do a Flying Dress photoshoot at a Tulum cenote instead of the beach?

Yes. Beyond the beach, we can organise dramatic cenote and jungle backdrops just minutes inland for a truly one-of-a-kind image — it is one of the things that sets a Tulum session apart. The cenote option deserves its own deep dive, so we will share the full details in a separate post, but the option absolutely exists.

What is the best time of day for a Flying Dress photoshoot in Tulum?

We recommend around 8 a.m. The light is soft and golden, the sea is calm and the beach is still quiet — perfect conditions, and ideal for that dramatic low-angle shot at Playa La Roca. The golden hour before sunset is a beautiful second choice. The dry season from November to April brings the most reliable conditions, and we help you pick the time that suits your schedule and the look you are after.

What should I wear under the Flying Dress, and what should I bring?

We shoot barefoot on the sand, so under the airy dress wear a strapless or backless swimsuit so nothing shows through the light fabric. The Flying Dress is included in your package in sizes XS to XXXL, along with your photographer and a clothing assistant. Just bring sunscreen and a hat for between shots, and come with hair and makeup done if you would like a polished look.

How much does a Flying Dress photoshoot in Tulum cost and how do I book?

Sessions start at $169 USD, and you reserve with just a $30 deposit, with the balance paid on the day of your session. The dress, your photographer and a clothing assistant are all included, and family or friends can join at no extra cost. Booking is done over WhatsApp or email, where we confirm your beach, your timing and the look you want.
